When One Door Closes...

I'm not going to lie, the thought of blogging makes me feel super nerdy- but I'll give it a go.

My literacy classes are reading Bud, Not Buddy and really seem to be enjoying it.  Today was the first time we were able to read outside because the weather was decent- for a whole 20 minutes.  When we came in, we continued to read and the main character (Bud) mentioned how his momma used to say "when one door closes- another one opens".  At the age of 10, Bud took this quiet literally and thought the Amoses door closed, which meant the library door would open.  I explained it to my students as the "closed door" was an opportunity or chance that had closed or finished and the "open door" was the same thing that was about to begin or present itself.

Still confused I explained to them that "at the end of the school year, when my time here is over- the door has closed, my opportunity is over.  However, somewhere, another opportunity will come along and that door will open."  The class grew quiet (which hardly happens) and I could see one of my girls looking at me.  I think they all realized that I was temporary and they wouldn't see me next year and I too realized it, getting a little choked up and sad.  I cherish the moments with them and will always remember them as my first class.

However, at the same time I applied to a school in the area today and maybe that is my "open door"- I sure hope so!

And now that I have the Doogie Howser theme running in my head, I think my first post is finished.
